Cultural Organizing Work

Cville Sabroso ~ Charlottesville, Virginia’s First Latin American Cultural Festival was established in 2013 by Estela of Lua Project and Fanny Smedile of Sin Barreras. The festival over the years has highlighted the rich cultural traditions of almost every Latin American country through their delicious food, music, dance and so much more. This is a family friendly event hosted every year on the 3rd Saturday of September and brings in around 5000 festival goers throughout the day.
Charlottesville’s beloved Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration and Exhibition—founded by Estela Diaz Knott of Lua Project and Laura Muñoz of Villa Sabrosa Dance Troupe—returns for its 14th year at McGuffey Art Center. Rooted in the ancient Mexican tradition held each November 1st and 2nd, Día de Muertos honors our ancestors and loved ones who have passed by creating ofrendas (altars) filled with their favorite foods, flowers, photos, and cherished items. Through music, dance, art, food, and shared remembrance, we celebrate the beauty of life and the deep connections that continue beyond death.
Over the years, Charlottesville’s celebration has blossomed to reflect the region’s natural abundance, weaving together art, local harvests, and community spirit. Families, individuals, and groups are invited to build altars in memory of loved ones or meaningful causes. Join us on First Friday, November 7th, from 5:30–8:00 PM, for an evening of music, dance, art, and food—free and open to all—as we come together to live, love, and remember. The exhibition will be open from November 4th through November 16th.
